Align Magazine
Background: Held a position as an illustrator for Align Magazine, a fashion and lifestyle student digital publication at the University of Oregon from October 2020 to June 2021. Each issue showcases writing, photography, and illustrations that adhere to a central theme. Winter 2021’s “Am I Dreaming?” was inspired by fantasy and dream-like elements. Spring 2021’s “The Optimist” focused on health, happiness, and healing. Summer 2021’s “Metamorphosis” covered stories of growth and change in a variety of forms. The Ask: Create one original illustration per issue to accompany an article for the publication.
The Work: A total of three illustrations and additional sticker designs were created using Adobe Illustrator.
The Summer 2021 illustration depicts a boy reading The Perks of Being a Wallflower on a playground, which pairs with a piece on the role of coming-of-age literature in the author’s life.
The Spring 2021 illustration features a video call with various Korean pop artists to match with a piece discussing how K-pop music has been able to promote self-love and positivity to the world.
The Winter 2021 illustration shows a girl who fell asleep at her desk and dreamed about a wildfire, which combines with a reflection about how the unprecedented and sudden events of 2020 helped to shape the author into the person she is now.
Sticker Designs: Opportunities arose to design stickers to be produced and sold for fundraising purposes in support of the magazine’s physical printing. The “Fashion Animals” (first) design was selected by the head magazine staff for the 2020-2021 academic year, and is still in use. The “Cosmic Nature” (second) design is the latest edition being used for the 2021-2022 academic year. The “Apple on a Bike” (third) design was also created and submitted for the 2021-2022 academic year, but was ultimately not selected.
Fundraiser Pop-Up Shop & House Show Event: Align Magazine hosted an in-person fundraising event on November 6th, 2021. All of the funds would go toward the magazine’s physical printing. Align Magazine also partnered with other students and local vendors to sell second-hand clothes, Align tote bags, stickers, band merchandise, reworked clothing, prints, and more. My sticker designs were among the items available for purchase. The second half of the event featured live music put on by local bands and artists.
The “Fashion Animals” and “Cosmic Nature” designs are still currently available for purchase. All sales will continue to go toward future printing efforts.
